I’ve been in the catering world long enough to know this: if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
I can’t tell you how many last-minute calls we’ve gotten from frantic folks whose “perfect” caterer bailed days before their event—or worse, showed up hours late with cold food and broken promises. The truth is, a lot of places can throw together a pretty website and offer dirt-cheap prices. But when it comes to your event, the stakes are too high to gamble.
Here are a few red flags I always tell people to watch out for:
1. Unrealistically Low Prices
If someone’s offering a full wedding dinner for 100 people at a price that barely covers groceries, something’s off. Quality ingredients, trained staff, equipment—these things cost money. Great catering is an investment, not a bargain bin deal.
2. No Tastings or Contract
A professional caterer should be proud to let you taste their food ahead of time. If they dodge your request or can’t offer a clear, written agreement, that’s a sign to walk away.
3. Vague Answers or “Trust Me” Vibes
You deserve straight answers about timing, portions, staffing, and menus. If someone keeps brushing off your questions or acting like you’re being picky, trust your gut.
4. Too Many Promises, Too Little Experience
Anyone can say they do it all. But a reliable caterer knows their strengths and will be honest about what they can—and can’t—pull off. Look for proof of past events, not just talk.
5. Lack of Reviews or an Online Ghost
If you can’t find them online or all their reviews seem fake or overly generic, that’s a red flag. A solid caterer should have a digital presence and happy clients willing to share their experiences.
